Holy Cross Catholic School Deerfield Illinois

Discover Program

The Discover program is one component of the Holy Cross drug awareness program. It is taught by volunteer parents in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th grades. (5th graders participate in the D.A.R.E.-Drug Abuse Resistance Education-program, 7th graders participate in Operation SNOWFLAKE, and 8th graders participate in the POWER program.) It is taught in 12 sessions each approximately half hour long. The first 6 sessions are taught in the fall starting during Red Ribbon week (the last week of October) and the second six sessions are taught starting after spring break.

The Discover program lessons emphasize four main areas:

  • Building self-esteem
  • Healthy decision-making
  • Factual information about drugs
  • Violence prevention skills.
The volunteer teachers follow lesson plans that are age-appropriate. Volunteers are supplied with many resources to teach the lessons including textbooks, activity handouts, and visual aides.
