Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week was launched in 1988 following the murder of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique Camarena by drug traffickers in 1985. The Red Ribbon symbolizes a commitment to healthy, drug-free lifestyles, no use of illegal drugs and no illegal use of legal drugs.

Red Ribbon Week is a time set aside annually in October to increase awareness about the negative effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and to promote safe, healthy, drug-free environments for everyone.

Holy Cross School proudly celebrates Red Ribbon Week:

  • Show your commitment by flying the red ribbon that your child is bringing home.
  • Wearing red to school on Friday, October 27, 2006.
  • Check out red ribbon placemats decorated by students on display at Italian Kitchen and Kevin's Place this week.
  • A recent study found that the "faith factor" was most influential in avoiding drug abuse, alcoholism and crime. Another study found that two reliable predictors of teenage drug avoidance were optimism about the future and regular church attendance.

A Prayer for Red Ribbon Week

Let us pray: Creator of our most precious children, thank you for each child you have put on this beautiful earth. Guide them to avoid the destructive habit of using alcohol or other drugs. Keep them safe from all violence. Fill any emptiness of heart with your Spirit. Teach us to care for each other. Amen.
